NEWPORT City are FAW Amateur Trophy champions after winning a remarkable final against Penrhyncoch 5-4.
The Steelmen, who are chasing promotion in Ardal SE, lifted the cup for the first time in their history at Newtown’s Latham Park where Richard Noyes’ long throws caused mayhem.
Newport were fast out of the blocks and took the lead through Calum Bateman after five minutes but momentum swung with goals either side of the break by the Roosters’ Harri Horwood and Rhys Jenkins to make it 2-1.
It looked like an uphill task when Penrhyncoch, of Ardal NE, stretched their lead through Dion Phillips after 55 minutes.
However, Newport showed their steel to quickly hit back through Cole Jarvis' smart finish from a Noyes long throw and then Noyes levelled on the hour when his cross went all the way through.
The Steelmen hit the front again with just when Joseph Ogugua scored from close range to make it 4-3 and then another Noyes missile led to James Bloom getting the fifth.
The Roosters made it a nervy finale when Tomos Evans struck, making Newport have to dig deep before the final whistle was blown after 14 minutes of added time.
Sam Houldsworth’s side are yet to lose in 2024 and will now attempt to make it a double success by earning promotion from Ardal SE.
They are unlikely to overhaul leaders Trethomas but look set to finish second to earn a promotion play-off against a side from Ardal SW, likely to be either Penrhiwceiber or Cefn Cribwr.
